John Chu is the author of the 2014 Hugo Award-winning short story "The Water That Falls on You from Nowhere," which has been anthologized in Wilde Stories 2014: The Year's Best Gay Speculative Fiction (ed. Berman, Lethe Press, 2014). His other short fiction has appeared in Bloody Fabulous: Stories of Fantasy and Fashion (ed. Sedia, Prime Books, 2012), The Time Traveler's Almanac (eds. VanderMeer and VanderMeer, Tor Books, 2014), Boston Review, Asimov's, Apex Magazine, and Tor.com, among other places. His translations of Chinese fiction have been published in Clarkesworld, The Big Book of Science Fiction (eds. VanderMeer and VanderMeer, Vintage Books, 2016), among other places. His own short story "Beyond the El" was published by Tor.com in January, 2019.

He has narrated stories for EscapePod, PseudoPod, PodCastle, and Lightspeed Magazine, and he has taught at Shared Worlds and Clarion West Writers Workshop. He attended Viable Paradise X (2006) and the 2010 Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers' Workshop, and is currently a member of the BRAWL writers' group.
